Mary Evans: Cut and Paste

Mary Evans is a Nigerian-born, London- based artist. In the words of one writer, “Her work reasserts the idea that remembrance is both an individual and collective responsibility. Most importantly, her visual subterfuges are essential reminders in a society prone to historical amnesia.”

Pattern is a strong recurring theme in Evans’ practice, however, the work is rarely purely ornamental but often reveals the historical, architectural or social threads of its source. Evans’ research interests are centered on the social, political and historical frameworks of Diaspora and migration. This cross-cultural discourse is paralleled by a secondary discourse that links methods of image production, ’fine art’ and ‘craft’, decoration and ornament.

Evans is an Associate Lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London.
