College of Liberal Arts

Policy Statements

The Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies coordinates College-level polices that impact students' academic progress and engages in University- and nation-wide conversations about graduate education.

Academic Accommodation for Graduate Student Parents

The College of Liberal Arts endorses an academic accommodation for new parents that will grant students a one-semester extension in the expected time to degree in cases of childbirth or adoption. The goal of this accommodation is to emphasize that new parents among our graduate students will not be penalized for a delay in progress toward degree.

Time to Degree and Graduate Student Funding

The Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies has released a Statement on Time to Degree and Graduate Student Funding in the College of Liberal Arts. The plan encourages reduced time to degree and limits on the number of years of funding the College will offer individual graduate students. Gradual implementation will begin in the 2014-15 academic year.

Option to Embargo Electronic Publication of Dissertations

The Graduate Assembly conducted an in depth study of the use of the dissertation embargo among graduate students at UT and considered the reasons for this practice across disciplines. A new policy will take effect in Fall 2015, which will include options of no embargo and two year embargo, with the option to renew after two years.
