Professor Naomi Lindstrom appointed Associate Director of Schusterman Center
Mon, January 30, 2012
Professor Naomi Lindstrom began the spring semester as the new associate director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies.
Dr. Lindstrom, Professor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, has made significant contributions in teaching and strengthening research ties at the Schusterman Center. Indeed, she was instrumental in arranging for the center to host the XVI International Research Conference of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (June 9–11, 2013).
Dr. Lindstrom has also maintained and developed the LAJSA Web site, hosted by the College of Liberal Arts, which now includes a database of Latin American Jewish Studies theses and dissertations and an archive of relevant course syllabi within the field.
Professor Robert Abzug, director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, said Dr. Lindstrom’s commitment to Latin American Jewish Studies will bolster the center’s current academic goals.
“Dr. Lindstrom’s appointment will greatly aid in making the Schusterman Center the first Jewish Studies program to have as one of its major specializations the comparative study of Jewish life in all of the Americas,” Dr. Abzug said. “It will also put in a leadership position an extremely genial, talented, and creative intellectual/administrator.”
The fall semester proved rewarding for Dr. Lindstrom, as in addition to her appointment, she received a 2011–2012 President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award. The award, established in 1980, recognizes commitment and outstanding performance in teaching undergraduates. Dr. Lindstrom consistently brings this enthusiasm and rigor to her own Jewish Studies course, Latin American Jewish Writers, which she has taught since 1982 (SPN 352/J S 363/LAS 370S).
As an active, longtime member of the Jewish Studies community at The University of Texas, Dr. Lindstrom has helped to establish and shape the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies. Her role as associate director will allow her to contribute even more to the center’s progress and to extend its academic reach.
“We have worked together to great effect form the very founding days of the center, and Naomi being associate director will only lead to its richer and more wide-ranging presence at the university,” Dr. Abzug said.
On behalf of the center, congratulations to Dr. Lindstrom!
