The Austin Polish Society is hosting a celebration of Polish Freedom Day, which commemorates the 25-year anniversary of Poland's first free elections, held on June 4, 1989.

A celebration of 25 years of freedom in Poland
What: The first celebration of Polish “Freedom Day” – a day to commemorate 25 years since the first free elections held in Poland on June 4, 1989
Date: Sunday, June 1, 2014
Time: 3 pm – 5 pm
Where: UT-Austin Campus, Mezes Hall, Room 1.306
Please bring your family and friends and join the Austin Polish Society for a reception, films, educational activities, and an exhibit to mark this special event.
There will be a brief message from Dr. Leszek Balcerowicz, Polish economist and former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Poland, who will receive the 2014 Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty, a biennial award presented by Cato Institute to an individual for achievement in promoting freedom and individual liberty.
There will also be a presentation of a Polish documentary film, Poland In Freedom, providing commentary on the changes in Poland since 1989, directed by Ireneusz Engler (56 min.). Poland in Freedom summarizes the effects of the economic transition in free Poland including the business and free trade, legalization of free trade unions, economic, political and cultural openness, communication opportunities, free access to and creation of works of art, the lifting of censorship, a free media market, etc.
These major accomplishments are commented upon by people who played a significant role in the process of transformation, such as: Lech Wałęsa, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Archbishop Tadeusz Gocłowski (the bishop of Gdańsk involved in anti-communist opposition), Leszek Balcerowicz (Polish Minister of Finance), Joanna Szczepkowska (actress), Izabela Sierakowska (MP, representing a post-communist party), Wojciech Reszczyński (journalist), Schewach Weiss (former Israeli Ambassador in Poland), and Piotr Bikont (filmmaker).

There will also be an introduction to UT Austin Polish Studies Endowment Scholarship awardee, Ms. Darcey Holender, an exhibit of Polish Solidarity Memorabilia, and a Polish History Challenge.
