Tatiana Kuzmic is the new Assistant Professor of Slavic and Balkan Studies in the Department of Slvaic and Eurasian Studies. Kuzmic comes to Austin from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she received her doctoral degree in May 2008.

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies announces a call for proposals to conduct research or develop new course material focused on our region. These summer-long mini-grants are for educators from institutes of higher education and qualified middle and high school teachers in Texas and the greater southwest. The recipients of these grants will be invited to present the result of their research at UT Austin to CREEES faculty and students. Preference will be given to applicants outside the University of Texas at Austin. The grant award is: $1000

For undergraduate students, the essay must have previously been submitted for a regularly scheduled course during the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The essay may deal with any aspect of Slavic Studies (history, politics, art, religion, culture, literature, economics, etc.) and there is no page limit requirement. To receive consideration from the Essay Competition Committee, you must be currently enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, an undergraduate program in one of the following states: TX, OK, LA, NM and AZ. Undergraduate essays may also be submitted by the supervising instructor on behalf of the student.

The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2008.
