LLILAS New Faculty Presentations Series: Daniel Fridman - "Consumption in the Time of Terror: Argentina in the Last Dictatorship"

Wed, November 6, 2013 | Hackett Room, SRH 1.313

12:00 PM

Daniel Fridman, Dept. of Sociology and LLILAS, examines the politics of consumption in Argentina during the last dictatorship (1976-1983). At the same time the military junta carried its systematic plan of state repression, neoliberal economic policy-makers set out to produce and educate a new consumer, who would become "the sovereign of the market". New economic policies aimed at taming inflation indirectly encouraged middle class consumption of foreign goods and international tourism, giving birth to new forms of consumer culture. Dr. Fridman examines government consumer education campaigns and coverage of consumption, inflation, and the new consumer culture in the national press.
