South Asia Institute co-sponsors national conference

The Asian Studies Graduate Conference, on Oct 13-14, provides a dynamic forum for graduate students working on original research projects across disciplines and across traditional academic divisions of Asia to present their work and benefit from a scholarly exchange of ideas.
Sessions are: Erudite Kings, Missionaries, and Narrative: Conversion and the Other in Space and the Global Market; Ethnicity, Conflict and Memory: Creating Politics and Art in Asia; Transcending the Nation: Crossing the Border of Power, Economy, and Culture; Performance; Patronage.
Weekly seminars will center on "Modes of Narration in South Asian Histories and Religions"

The South Asia Institute is excited to launch the weekly South Asia Seminar series for Fall 2006. The series features seminars by distinguished South Asian specialists from UT and abroad. This semester's theme is "Modes of Narration in South Asian Histories and Religions". Regular seminars occur on Thursdays at 3:30 pm, preceded by a reception at 3:00 pm, in the Meyerson Conference Room (WCH 4.118). Raja Rao, one of India's most distinguished writers and a retired professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Texas, died at his home in Austin on Saturday, July 8, 2006, at the age of 97.

The South Asia Institute at The University of Texas at Austin announces a two-day workshop developed for college educators entitled " Teaching India Through Film." This workshop will enable participants to discuss the socio-political role of the Indian film industry (the largest in the world) and to direct their gaze upon issues of religion, sexuality, and economics that charge Indian films.
