4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Laura León Llerena earned a PhD from Princeton University (2011) and is currently a Lecturer of Colonial Latin American Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. Her research focuses on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries colonial Latin America, with particular emphasis on the Andean region. Her book in progress "Historia, lenguaje y narración en el Manuscrito de Huarochirí" presents an in-depth study of an anonymous native Andean text written in the Quechua language at the end of the sixteenth century or early seventeenth century in Peru. This work shows how in the Huarochirí Manuscript language and narrative expose the possibilities and limits of the written word and how the colonization of Quechua language was crucial on the redefinition of social and cultural identities in early colonial contexts.

This lecture is part of our Colonial Lecture Series 2011-2012.
