La hora azul / The Blue Hour

A bilingual reading from Alonso Cueto’s acclaimed novel, followed by a conversation with the author about literature and translation.

Alonso Cueto (b. Lima, 1954) earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984.  His doctoral dissertation was a critical study of the short fiction of the Uruguayan writer Juan Carlos Onetti.  Since then, Cueto has published some twenty books encompassing short stories, novels, novelas, plays, and essays. His fiction has been translated into 15 languages.  

Cueto’s fiction has won numerous literary prizes, making him one of the most prominent writers in Latin America.  He lives in Lima, where he is associate professor of Literature and Linguistics at the Universidad Católica.  Cueto has also worked as a columnist for various newspapers in Lima.

 

Literary awards:

Premio Wiracocha, 1985, for El tigre blanco.

Premio Anna Seghers, 2000, Germany, for the whole body of his work.

Premio Herralde, 2005, for La hora azul.

Premio de la Casa Editorial de la República de China, for La hora azul, considered the best novel in Spanish, 2004-5.

Premio Casa de América-Planeta, 2007, second-place for El susurro de la mujer ballena.
