Prof. Melissa Murphy Receives Prestigious Teaching Award.

Tue, April 15, 2014

Prof. Melissa Murphy is the recipient of the Raymond Dickson Centennial Endowed Teaching Fellowship, which recognizes teaching excellence in the College of Liberal Arts. Prof. Murphy has been a lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese since 2008, during which time she has served as the supervisor of SPN 610D, and since Summer 2013, as the Director and Coordinator of the Language Programs in Spanish and Portuguese.  In these capacities, she has played a vital role in the transformation of our language program, which does not simply teach the traditional "four skills" (reading, writing, speaking and listening) but also cultural knowledge and, most daringly, metalinguistic content, a critical thinking skill.
Prof. Murphy is an outstanding classroom teacher: rigorous, but also generous and fair.  Her students call her “amazing,” “engaging,” “positive,” “encouraging,” “enthusiastic,” “great,” “awesome,” “caring,” “accessible,” “organized,” “warm,” “understanding,” “effective,” “energetic,” “helpful,” “cool,” and “the best professor I ever had.”  We agree and offer her our warmest congratulations.
