Policies and Appeals

First Dismissal Policy

A student’s first scholastic dismissal lasts for one long-session semester and any intervening summer sessions. Students on first dismissal are automatically eligible for return to the university provided they complete an application for readmission by the deadline and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA on any work taken at another institute during the dismissal. Please refer to the Office of Admissions for more information about the readmission process. Students returning from dismissal will be on scholastic probation.

First Dismissal Appeals: Only college approval of a Scholastic Dismissal Appeal (PDF 61.19K) will prevent a first dismissal. A student may appeal if urgent, substantiated, and non-academic factors hindered their academic performance.  Very few students win approval for appeals immediately following dismissal. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the Student Division (GEB 2.306) to discuss their academic options.

Second Dismissal Policy

A student’s second dismissal lasts for three calendar years. Readmission after a second dismissal is not guaranteed. Students on second dismissal must have the approval of their student dean to return to the university. Students who have been dismissed for a second time are encouraged to meet with a Student Division advisor in GEB 2.306 to discuss their academic options.

Second Dismissal Appeals: Only college approval of a Scholastic Dismissal Appeal (PDF 61.19K) will prevent a second dismissal. A student may appeal if urgent, substantiated, and non-academic factors hindered their academic performance.  Very few students win approval for appeals immediately following dismissal. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the Student Division (GEB 2.306) to discuss your academic options.

Early Return from a Second Dismissal: Only college approval of an Appeal to Return from 2nd Dismissal (PDF 69.1K) will allow for an early return from a second dismissal. A Scholastic Dismissal Appeal for an early return will be considered if the student has met the following criterion:

  • The student has sat out at least two long-session semesters AND
  • The student has raised his or her cumulative GPA to a 2.0

Return from a Second Dismissal after serving out 3 years: After sitting out three years from a second dismissal, most students will be allowed to return to UT Austin if the Associate Dean for Student Affairs assesses the student has a "reasonable chance of completing a degree." Student must complete an Appeal to Return from 2nd Dismissal (PDF 69.1K) and receive approval to return.

Third Dismissal Policy

Students dismissed for the third time will not be readmitted.

Third Dismissal Appeal: Appeals to continue or to return to UT Austin following a third dismissal will not be considered except in the most extreme, extenuating circumstances. Very few students win approval for appeals immediately following dismissal. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the Student Division (GEB 2.306) to discuss their academic options.
