Film Series: Tragic Comedies from the Eastern Bloc
Date: September 22 - October 27
Location: Geography Building, Room 102
Time: 7:30 PM
The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies presents "Laughter through Tears: Tragic Comedies from the Eastern Bloc," featuring four film screenings:
Sept. 22: "Nothing Funny"(Poland)
The story is about a film director named Adas told through personal reflections and a review of his own life. Although Adas has brief moments of success, he always comes in second and this infuriates him. His ranting self talk, which narrates the movie, is hilarious.
Oct. 6: "Ivan Vasilevich Changes Profession"(Russia)
Shurik Timofeev builds a working model of a time machine. By accident, Ivan Bunsha, an apartment complex manager, and George Miloslavsky, a petty burglar, are transported to 16th-century Moscow, while Tsar Ivan the Terrible goes into the year 1973.
Oct. 27: "Autumn Spring"(Czech Republic)
Terminal prankster Frantisek Hána refuses to grow up and take certain responsibilities, despite his wife Emilie's constant badgering to do so. Even faced with his own looming death and an ungrateful son who wants to whisk his parents off to the old folks' home, Frantisek's wit won't quit as he vows to live until he dies.
All films have English subtitles and are free and open to the public
