Step 2: Summer StartSchedule Planning

This section provides information on how to select courses for registration. It includes the Advising and Registration Worksheet and information on degree plans, transfer (dual) course credit and credit by exam.

Advising and Registration Worksheet

Please download and fill out the appropriate worksheet, Freshman or Transfer as you progress through these steps. When you have completed this fillable form, you should submit it via fax or email (see the contact information on the worksheet).

Transfer (Dual) Course Credit and Credit by Exam

Before choosing classes, determine what credit you may already have earned. Transfer credit and credit by exam will be discussed in depth at orientation, but thinking about it now will help with your preliminary course selections.

Transfer (Dual) Credit

Students who have earned credit at another institution of higher education while in high school through “dual credit” or another program, should determine the transfer equivalency for that coursework prior to registration.  For example, students who have a year of English dual credit will often have RHE 306 and 309K and should therefore avoid those classes.

Transfer equivalency may be determined using the Automated Transfer Equivalency, or ATE, database. Transcripts from the other institution must be sent to UT Austin Admissions.

Below is a list of courses commonly taken for dual credit. Review your dual credit and any additional courses taken. Visit the Automated Transfer Equivalency System for additional courses (http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/). Be sure to have your transcript sent from the college or university where courses were taken.

Credit by Exam

SAT and ACT Writing Sections
Scores of 600 or higher on the SAT Writing section or 26 or higher on the ACT Writing section will allow students to claim credit for Rhetoric & Writing (RHE) 306.

AP exams
AP Language and Composition scores of 3 and above will allow students to claim credit for RHE 306.  Students who do not know their score but anticipate receiving at least a 3 may register for a RHE 309K or 309S if they choose.

Students who took other AP exams (Economics, Geography, etc.) should avoid taking those specific courses in summer.

Below is a list of exams commonly taken. Review your AP or other placement exams. Visit the Student Testing Services website for additional scores and information. Basic Requirements and Electives

Having some understanding of the basic core and Liberal Arts degree requirements will help you make informed course selections later. We recommend that you create a balanced schedule by choosing courses from different areas.

Below is a very general description of basic course requirements for Liberal Arts students. For more detailed degree requirements, please refer to the degree plan information below.

UGS 302 or 303 Signature Course
RHE 306 Rhetoric and Writing
E 316K Masterworks of Literature (choose from American, English, or World)
Two courses flagged as writing courses
Fourth-semester proficiency in a single foreign language
GOV 310L American Government
GOV 312L Issues and Policies in American Government
Six hours of United States history
Six hours social science
Three hours Math
Fifteen hours natural sciences
Three hours visual and performing arts
Three hours general culture
Major (between 21 and 39 hours, depending on major)
Minor (usually 12 hours)
Electives: There is no set number of elective hours. This will be determined by the number of hours needed to reach 120.

When considering courses, be thinking about your intended major if you have one: students interested in majoring in Anthropology, for example, would likely fulfill one of their social science requirements with ANT 302, 305, or 307.

For more detailed degree requirement information, consult one of the following resources: university core requirements, Liberal Arts General Degree Plan, major-specific degree plans (be sure to choose 2010-2012 catalog).

Course Selection

All Students

SummerStart students must register for a group seminar facilitated by academic advisor in addition to six hours of courses discussed below. The goal of the seminar is to forge a link between academic and social experiences. It will address issues such as transition to UT Austin, time management, scholarships, research opportunities, and major exploration. This course is not for academic credit and will not increase your tuition.

Freshman

We strongly encourage SummerStart freshmen to sign up for one course from each of the two lists below. Keep this guideline in mind as you work through the sections below. You can find descriptions of the courses through links under each section. We’ve identified the requirement each course fulfills.
