UT Commencement 2001

  Faculty Marshals

The Grand Procession of Degree Candidates is led by the University Marshals, faculty members who present the total ensemble of candidates to the administration for confirmation of the degrees. They are followed by Faculty Marshals who on behalf of the individual colleges and schools, lead their specific candidates to the celebration. Each marshal carries a mace, a symbol of the authority and charge given to the faculty to educate students. Wood and carvings for some of the maces came from Old Main, UT's first academic structure built in the 1880's. Others have been designed to mark special occasions in the history of The University.
