Inspiring Ambition Commencement 2005

Message from the President

University of Texas President Larry R. Faulkner Photo

I invite you to join us for the 123rd Spring Commencement at The University of Texas at Austin.  Our Commencement ceremony is one of the most uplifting and enjoyable events you will ever experience.  In a festive evening of music, tradition and spectacular fireworks, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our graduating students.

Oscar Henry Cooper, a prominent 19th century Texas educator and one of the founders of the university, once wrote, "The University of Texas is not the lengthened shadow of any one man or any group of men — it is the noblest concrete embodiment of the best spirit of Texas."

For 123 years, our institution has represented this state's greatest aspirations and noblest dreams.  In the best spirit of Texas, UT has inspired generations of outstanding students to pursue their ambitions and to make valuable contributions to their communities, to Texas and to the nation.  Our graduates carry that spirit with them when they go out and make their mark on the world.

Commencement is a time to celebrate, to reminisce and to look to the future.  I congratulate the graduates and offer my sincere appreciation to their parents, friends and family members for instilling perseverance and spirit into these extraordinary students.

William Powers Jr., President
