Tickets for Programs

Tickets are required for some programs for degree candidates and their guests.

University-wide Ceremony

All degree candidates participating in the evening Commencement on May 19 are required to present a ticket when lining up for the Grand Procession. Tickets will be available beginning Monday, May 7, at the Frank Erwin Center and the Performing Arts Center box offices.

Tickets are for degree candidates only and are free of charge. No tickets are required for guests. Tickets are not available by phone. They must be picked up in person by presenting a UT ID. Seating for guests is on a first come, first served basis.

Procession tickets may be picked up at the following locations beginning Monday, May 7:

   The Performing Arts Center Box Office
   (23rd Street and Robert Dedman Drive)
   Open Noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday
   Special hours Friday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
   Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

   Frank Erwin Center Red River Box Office
   (1701 Red River Street)
   Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday
   Special hours Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Plan II Convocation

Due to limited seating, guests attending the Plan II ceremony will be required to present tickets for admission to Hogg Auditorium  Degree candidates for this ceremony will receive information in official communications. Questions should be directed to the department representative.

Tickets are not required for admission to other convocations.

 

Assembly Area for the Grand Procession of Degree Candidates on Saturday Evening, May 19

All graduates should line up south of Littlefield Fountain between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Staff and posted signs will direct degree candidates to their college or school assembly locations in this general area. See candidate marshaling area map for details. The Grand Procession begins at 8 p.m., proceeding up the South Mall to the Main Mall where degree candidates will be seated.

 

Academic Dress, Invitations and Announcements

Academic regalia for degree candidates is traditional for college, school, department ceremonies and the university-wide Commencement. Academic regalia, printed invitations and announcements for mailing to family and friends are available for purchase from the University Co-op at the following locations: Graduation Store in the Co-op Outlet at 2304 Guadalupe (512) 476-7211, Ext. 8210; Co-op East at  2902 Medical Arts  (512) 472-6156 and Co-op Riverside at 2237 East Riverside (512) 447-4376.

The Co-op recommends mailing invitations by May 1st, to allow time for delivery. Announcements may be mailed out at any time before or after the ceremony.

Services for Degree Candidates with Disabilities

Special services are available to accommodate needs of degree candidates with disabilities who will be participating in Commencement activities. Degree candidates who require accommodations due to a disability are asked to contact their college, school or department representative so the proper arrangements can be made prior to arrival at Commencement convocations. Services for students with disabilities are available through the Dean of Students' office. Please call Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at (512) 471-6259 or by TDD at (512) 471-4641 prior to 5 p.m. On Saturday, May 19, information is available by calling the University Police Department at (512) 471-4441 or by TDD (512) 471-4777. While every effort will be made, the university may be unable to fulfill last-minute requests.


University Housing

Degree candidates living in university residence halls may apply to stay on campus in a central location through Saturday, May 19. Instructions will be mailed to graduating seniors in mid April.

Frequently Asked Questions

· What is the difference between my college, school or department "convocation" and the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

"Convocations" hosted by colleges, schools and departments, provide the occasion at which degree candidates are recognized individually.  Forms of recognition vary depending upon the college, school or department.  For example, in the graduate school convocations, doctor's and master's students are hooded ceremonially.  Most convocations include degree candidates names being read aloud as they cross the stage and shake hands with their dean or department chairperson. 

The University-wide Commencement ceremony takes place following all of the convocations and is the culmination of the Commencement weekend.  All degree candidates from every college and school are eligible to participate. At this ceremony, students are recognized with others from their college or school as a group rather than individually. The ceremony takes place in front of the Tower and includes a distinguished guest speaker, conferring of degrees by the president and the traditional lighting of the Tower in orange to honor graduates.  The celebration concludes with a fireworks display. 

· Do I need to wear a cap and gown?  If so, where can I buy them?

A cap and gown, commonly referred to as "academic regalia," are traditionally worn at all convocations and commencement ceremonies.  They may be acquired at the University Co-op.

· I’m a graduate student.  Should I attend the Graduate School convocation or my college, school or department convocation? 

Most students receiving a graduate degree attend the Graduate School convocations.  Specialized graduate and professional programs such as the Master of Business Administration, the LBJ School and the Law School host individual convocations.  However, in most cases, a graduate student can attend both the Graduate School convocation and the convocation for their specific college, school or department if they wish to do so.  Consult the commencement schedule for details.  

· Do I need tickets for the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

All degree candidates participating in the Grand Procession of Degree Candidates are required to present a procession ticket as they line up for the procession.

· Is there a limit on the number of guests I can bring to the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

Seating for the University-wide Commencement ceremony is limited but there are no restrictions on the number of seats available to each graduate.  The seating area for guests opens at 5 p.m. and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Indoor viewing locations are also available for those who wish to view the ceremony in the comfort of an air-conditioned environment.

· What time should I plan to arrive at the Littlefield Fountain to line up for the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

Degree candidates should arrive at 7:30 p.m. at the Littlefield Fountain for the procession of degree candidates that will begin at 8 p.m.  Signage and volunteers will direct degree candidates to the appropriate, "marshaling" areas prior to the start of the procession. 

· My parents want to take a picture of me as I walk in.  Where should they sit?

For reasons of crowd safety, guests and parents will not be allowed to crowd or block the aisle ways at any time during the ceremony, including the procession.  Since all degree candidates will process up the sidewalks of the South Mall towards the Tower in the procession, there is no location accessible for parents and guests to get close up photos of their graduate in the procession. 

Graduates and their families are welcome to take photos in one of the scenic locations around the commencement site prior to 7:30 p.m. or following the ceremony.  These locations include the steps of Inner Campus drive, the Littlefield Fountain and the East Mall Fountain.  Limited access to the stage area will be available following the ceremony.  Graduates wishing to access the stage to take a photo should gather on the east corner of the stage.  To maintain a safe environment for graduates posing for photos on the stage, ushers and University police officers will regulate the flow of graduates onto and off of the stage. 

· Are there accommodations for guests with disabilities at the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

Special services are available to accommodate needs of those persons with disabilities who will be attending the university wide Commencement ceremony on the Main Mall.  Consult the Disability Services page of this website for details regarding those services. 

· How do I order a DVD of the University-wide Commencement ceremony?

DVDs of the University-wide Commencement ceremony, along with other commemorative items, are available for purchase online or by completing the order form that will be enclosed with your diploma. 

· Do I need tickets for my convocation?

For fire-safety reasons due to limited seating, tickets are required for those attending the Plan II Honors program convocation in Hogg Auditorium.  Tickets are not required for any other convocation. 

· Is there a limit on the number of guests a candidate can bring to the convocation?

There are no limitations to the number of degree candidate guests for any of the convocations with the exception of those in the Plan II program.  However, seating is not guaranteed and is available on a first-come, first-served basis for all convocations.

· Will there be a photographer taking pictures of candidates as they walk across the stage?  How do I order copies of those photos?

A professional photographer will take photos of degree candidates as they cross the stage at all convocations.  Students will receive information from the vendor in each location detailing the process for obtaining photos.   Contact your representative for details.

· Are there accommodations for guests with disabilities at the convocation?

Special services are available to accommodate needs of those persons with disabilities who will be attending convocations on campus.  Consult the Disability Services page of this website for details regarding those services.
