Dear Selection Committee:

Digital Equipment Corporation is pleased to provide a letter of recommendation to Intel Corporation for the proposal made to you by The University of Texas. Digital understands that Academic Computing, Computer Sciences, Petroleum Engineering, and the Colleges of Engineering, Business and Communications as well as the Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics are all collaborating on an institutional response to Intel's RFP entitled, "Utilization of Advanced Intel-Based Platforms in Computationally Demanding Tasks". We have reviewed the RFP, and believe that the University is well qualified to respond.

Digital has worked with the University on a variety of projects including research with Petroleum Engineering and studies with Academic Computing. We believe that the University is well positioned as a major research university to successfully manage and conduct collaborative research and teaching programs in a wide spectrum of IT supported engineering, science, communications, and business applications. The University also has a significant and growing commitment to Windows NT and is participating in nationally recognized high performance initiatives such as NPACI and vBNS.

Digital recommends The University of Texas at Austin as an education partner and looks £orward to Intel Corporation's review and support of the University's proposal.

Sincerely,

Original letter signed by Mr. Melling

Wesley P. Melling
