Printing on ITS Printers: Windows

Information Technology Services (ITS) has printers at several sites on campus, including the Student Microcomputer Facility (SMF) in FAC 212. This document explains how to use these printers with a computer running Macintosh OS X 10.0 or higher.

To use ITS printing services, you must have an ITS computer account. Also, effective with the 2002 fall semester, ITS switched to a new Pay-In-Advance system. If you were familiar with the previous ITS billing system, some things may have changed.

Individually funded (IF) accounts are available from the Help Desk (for students, faculty, and staff) or from the Student Microcomputer Facility (SMF) in the Flawn Academic Center, FAC 212 (for students only). You can also claim an account online.

  • To go directly to the sign-up page for personal accounts, see ITS Computer Services. (https://utdirect.utexas.edu/its/account/user_agreement.WBX)
  • If you need instructions on how to add ITS Printing, see Add or Cancel Services. (http://www.utexas.edu/its/account/steps/)
  • If you need additional help in claiming your account or signing up for services, contact the ITS Help Desk.
  • To view details about the pay-in-advance system, see the related ITS news article.

Each time you print, your account is charged on a per-page basis. Current printing prices are available in your ITS Computer Account Services page. (Click View / Modify to see the prices.)

General Information Before You Begin

To use ITS Remote Printing Services, you need:

  • An ITS computer account and password, with Print Relay System authorization (PRS). PRS authorization comes automatically with Individually Funded (IF) personal accounts. Web-based IF account application forms are processed online at http://www.utexas.edu/its/account/. They are also issued at the ITS Help Desk (students, faculty and staff), or at the SMF in FAC 212 (students only). If you are using a departmental account rather than an IF account, your account sponsor must authorize PRS service for your departmental user number.
  • Funds in your pre-paid IF or Bevo Buck account. Each time you print, a charge is made against your pre-paid account. Staff and faculty use IF accounts, while students use Bevo Buck accounts. Money must be present in your account before you can print pages using the Remote Printing application.
  • An Internet connection:
    • a hardwired Ethernet connection through
    • a dial-up (Telesys) or cable modem connection to UTnet; or
    • an on-campus wireless connection (Public Network).
  • WinPOPS = ITS Remote Printing software installed on a Windows machine running Windows 98 or higher. You can install it from the BevoWare CD or download it from the BevoWare download site. If you use Windows 95, install the Windows 98/ME version of the software. WinPOPS must be installed before running driver installer. (www.utexas.edu/its/bevoware)
  • NT Print = Lexmark Printer Drivers that enable you to use Lexmark printers on campus. To install them, run Setup Printers for WinPOPS from the BevoWare CD available from the Campus Computer Store. OR, download this installer from the BevoWare download site. WinPOPS must be installed before you run this installer. (www.utexas.edu/its/bevoware)

Please note: Pay-In-Advance is now the main payment method for ITS printing. You will be unable to print unless you have money in your Bevo Bucks account and have authorized it for ITS Printing. For details, see the ITS Prepaid Accounts page.

UT Law School has 5 different printer that users can choose from:

    • 2nd floor printer: lawflr2_lw (located in the lobby of the Law library to the left of the circulation desk)
    • 5th floor printer: lawclc_lw (5th floor computer lab)
    • Special printer: lawclc_lw_spec (5th floor computer lab: for resume printing)
    • Color Printer: lawclc_clw (5th floor computer lab)
    • Transparency: lawclc_clw_trans (5th floor computer lab)

If the printer description begins with "(Private)", then don't print to it without explicit permission. Otherwise, these descriptions are reasonably self-explanatory. Some even include the charge per copy.

  1. Select a printer. Let's assume you want to print to the black-and-white printer at the SMF (FAC 212). Select FACSMF_LW and click OK. Remember, the name you chose when setting up the printer should accurately describe the printer you are associating with it. (For example, you should not associate a printer in Jester with the name "SMF.")
  2. Once you have configured your desired printer, you will need to adjust the printer’s properties by following the steps below:
    1. Right-click the printer icon and select Properties.
    2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Details tab, then click the Spool Settings... button.
    3. Select the Print after last page is spooled and Disable Bidirectional Support check boxes, then click OK.

If you have any questions about the name or location of the printers, check http://www.utexas.edu/computer/printing/locations/ or ask the Network Administrator for that building. You can also call the Help Desk at 475-9400.

If you need to rename a printer, open the Printers control panel (Start-->Settings-->Printers), right-click on the printer and select Rename.

Click OK to save your printer settings.

The printer is now configured for remote printing. You only need to set up your printers once. From now on, you will just need to follow the steps in the Printing section below.
