Some Yoruba Social Realities in Selected Songs of Haruna Isola

This paper is an attempt at highlighting some social realities among the Yoruba ethnic tribe from south-western Nigeria using the selected songs of Haruna Isola as a guide. It attempts to show some social values and beliefs held sacred and esteemed among the Yorubas and the wealth inherent in the Yoruba language as exemplified in the selected songs through the artiste choice of words and vivid imagery. Notable among these social values are alafia (good health), "owo nini" (wealth), "igbeyawo" (marriage), "omo nini" (being procreatively fruitful), "Igbowo fun agba" (to which mere "respect for elders" might not be an adequate translation), "itore aanu" (philantropism) and some others. The wealth of the language is looked at in Isola's employment of proverbs, maxims and axioms in presenting or representing the social values under discussion. Parallels are very sparingly drawn as seen fit from ancient Roman and Greek cultures from which is it not unknown western civilisation took its root. The paper is rounded off with comparison of the good old Yoruba tradition with the present day Yoruba tradition where the first language of the kids being born into the average Yoruba household is lamentably English.
