Historiography of Western Yoruba Borderlands

The Yoruba is one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. Its history and culture are relatively well documented on account of the early contacts with European missionaries and Western education. However, the historical searchlight seems to have been focused mainly on the core areas, especially the Oyo-Egba-Ibadan axis. This study will review existing works on the western frontier beginning from Samuel Johnson, Biobaku, Akinjogbin, Asiwaju, to Adediran; the works of European explorers and administrators such as Dazel, Parrinder, Morel, Meriner and the Yoruba historians on the Benin side of the boundary notably Igue and Yai. The study will highlight aspects of Yoruba history and culture that have been reflected and make recommendations to rectify the situation.
