Den Festival Songs: Historical Reconstruction from Ceremonial Re-Enactments in Eastern Yorubaland

Iden festival is celebrated by the Idanre, an ancient frontier Yoruba community, located in the Yoruba-Edo borderland. Like most frontier communities, the people have suffered neglect not only in terms of social infrastructure but also of historical scholarship. However, an acquaintance with the oral traditions of the people indicate that they have the potential of a reconsideration and/ revision of orthodoxies about Yoruba history. Idanre prides itself as another Ife, which is ancestral to some other Yoruba communities and which also served as another point of dispersal by some other Yoruba and, indeed, non-Yoruba peoples. The Iden festival songs tell the history of the Idanre people as it relates to the main Yoruba stock, their migrations from Ife and subsequent settlements in various locations as well as their relationships with other eastern Yoruba peoples who are confused about their places of origin.
