"I of the Valiant Stock": Yoruba Brides' Songs and the Autobiographical Genre

Brides' songs are oral texts about the self among the Yorubas of Nigeria. The songs belong to a genre exclusive to women getting married, and they are performed on the wedding's eve. The bride primarily occupies the subject position in this genre; hence she employs it to construct and praise herself and her family and to highlight several aspects of her family and communal lives. This paper will provide and describe examples of brides' songs; and examine the art of composition, recitation, and storage. The paper will consider the significance of the genre in relation to the developed subject position of African women in pre-colonial Africa. It will conclude by arguing that the genre debunks Eurocentric arguments that an autobiography can only be written, can only be about an individual, and is alien to Africa.
