The Yorubas : A History of Rich Tradition

The origin of the Yoruba nation is involved in obscurity like the early history of most nations the commonly received accounts are for the most part purely legendary. The early history of Yorubas could be traced to the Ife and the Oyo empires. The National historians are certain families retained by the king at Oyo whose office is hereditary, it is on them we depend as far as possible for any reliable information we now possess. The Yorubas are said to have sprung from Lamurudu one of the kings of Mecca whose offspring's include Oduduwa, the ancestor of the Yorubas. The period of time at which Lamurudu reigned is still unknown but from the accounts given of the revolution among his descendants and their dispersion, it appears to have been a considerable time after Mohammed. All the various tribes of the Yoruba nation trace their origin from Oduduwa and the city of Ile-Ife. In fact, Ile-Ife is fabled as the spot where God created man, white and black, and from where they dispersed all over the earth. The ancient Yoruba people were traditionally pagans, which accounted for their strong believe in idol worshipping. They however believe in the existence of an almighty God whom they term, "Olorun".
