Lagos, Yoruba and Nigerian Politics: 1900-1960

Until very recently, political development in Nigeria centered on Lagos, which had been privileged to be the first political and economic capital of Nigeria. Although Lagos was acknowledged to be the origin of political development in Nigeria, however, the issue of party formation had always been linked with Herbert McCauley and his party NNDP, formed in 1923. The British government in that year ordered that some legislative positions in Lagos and Calabar be contested for on the ratio of 2: 1 respectively. Prior to the formation of NNDP by McCauley, there had been some other political and quasi-political organizations established ostensibly to challenge brutish misrule and other aspects of governmental policies that were dimmed inimical to the interest6 of the people. This paper therefore looks at the role of Lagos in the political development of Nigeria in the period under consideration, taking into cognizant other parties established prior to and after the formation of NNDP in 1923. It also look mat the personalities behind these political parties and the roles played by them towards the emergent of Nigerian nation. The paper concludes by the pointing out that though Lagos is acknowledged by all as political capital of Nigeria, but desultory attention has been paid to the various developments that made it possible for Lagos to assume this pre- eminent in Nigeria's political history.
