Taiwo Olunlade is a senior lecturer in the Department of African Languages, Literatures, and Communication Arts at Lagos State University in Ojo, serving as acting head of the department for two sessions. He is also a doctoral student at the Department of African Languages and Literatures at Obafemi Awolowo University. Mr. Olunlade is currently working a publication, Content Analysis of Yoruba Newspapers 1859-2000, and has co-authored numerous secondary school textbooks. His edited works include "Yoruba Gbode", "Yoruba Ideas", and "Akewi n ke Books 1-3". He has had other articles published in numerous journals in the subjects of the Agbigba Divination System, yoruba children, poetry, taboos in selected yoruba praise, anddescriptive poetry.

The History of Yoruba Newspapers 1859-2002

This paper traces the history of the first Yoruba Newspaper "Iwe Iroyin" to the recently established ones in the southwestern part of Nigeria. The newspapers are grouped into two categories. The 'dead Newspapers' and "the existing Newspapers". The dead newspapers are the ones that came out for sometime before they finally packed up. The existing newspapers are those that are currently in circulation in Nigeria market. The birth and growth of existing Newspapers are examined on one hand and that of the dead newspapers on the other hand. The paper altempts to explain reasons for their growth and pre-mature death based on the available records in archives, libraries and the oral interviews conducted.
