The Role of Yoruba Women in Economic Development (A Case Study of Ojo Local Government)

Women constitute about 50% of the world population yet they control less than 10% of world income or resources.The role of women in economic development cannot be overemphasized since they are found to participate effectively in agriculture, retail trading, cottage industry and in the service industry. Despite the great roles played by women in the economic development of Youbaland their contribution remain highly undervalued and poorly recognised. This research therefore focuses on the role of women in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State on the economic development of Yorubaland in particular and Nigeria in general. In the paper, an attempt is made to X-ray the economic activities engaged in by women in this area and the bring to fore the factors which service as obstacle in the way of these women in attaining the peak of their chosen proffession. It is discovered in the paper that there is need for women to here better access to basic education and training to enable them actualise their potentials in different spheres of economic life. Social and cultural impediments which militate against women development should also be removed. The need for massive investment in social and economic ingrastruce cannot also not be over emphised, if the potentials of women on Yorubaland is to be actualised.
