IUPLR is a national consortium of university-based centers dedicated to the advancement of the Latino intellectual presence in the United States. IUPLR works to expand the pool of Latino scholars and leaders and increase the availability of policy-relevant Latino-focused research. IUPLR works to strengthen the network of its twenty centers, to enhance their institutional capacity and to foster faculty research. The primary purpose of this meeting will be to provide opportunities for faculty to share the scholarship that is being generated at their respective centers and institutes.
In the spring of 2005, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) at The University of Texas at Austin hosted the first IUPLR Biennial Conference. The event was well attended and highly successful. CMAS will again host the 2007 IUPLR Biennial Conference to be held on April 12-14, 2007 in Austin, Texas. Below please find more details about this important event.
CONFERENCE TITLE AND THEME.
SIGLO XXI: Economies of Class, Economies of Cultureis broadly intended to suggest that we now live in the twenty-first century when the expanding Latino communities in the United States are faced with class and cultural configurations and issues that are both challenges but also opportunities for the fruitful development of these peoples. We envision a conference with papers that explore these both traditional and emergent economies of culture and class, analyses preferably based on substantial empirical, textual or archival data. Such papers may focus on issues of health, language use, politics, immigration, literature and the arts, history, and popular culture, among others.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PRESENT AND HOW TO APPLY.
We are primarily inviting faculty from IUPLR institutions to submit a two-page abstract and a one-two page curriculum vita (cv) for review by the IUPLR Program Committee. However, the Program Committee may also invite abstracts from non-IUPLR faculty and IUPLR Working Research groups based on programmatic needs. While the conference is primarily oriented toward faculty, we will also consider proposals from advanced graduate students at the dissertation stage. For such students, we are also asking for a brief letter of support from their dissertation adviser. The firm deadline for submission of abstracts and cv’s is Friday, December 1, 2006.

SELECTION PROCESS AND CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS.
The Program Committee will meet to select papers and create panels of not more than four papers each with a discussant(s). Those invited will be asked to present extended, thirty-minute papers, not the usual “fifteen minute,” professional conference paper. Each selected participant will be expected to submit a finished paper by Friday, March 16, 2007 to allow sufficient time for distribution and reading by discussants. Papers not received or incomplete papers will not be included in the program. The IUPLR is not providing travel funds for this conference. It is our hope that IUPLR centers and institutes will be able to support their faculty and graduate students selected for this conference.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION.
The conference registration fee is $75.00. However, students are free with proof of enrollment. The registration payment web page is under construction and will be operational by Friday, December 15, 2006 (see note below).
LODGING AND TRANSPORTATION.
All registered participants are responsible for making their own lodging and transportation reservation. A block of rooms have been reserved at a rate of $139 per night at the Doubletree Guest SuitesAustin, 303 W. 15th Street, Austin, TX 78701, 800-222-8733.
