Jerusalem (1996). Director: Bille August

In the late 19th century, a small Swedish village is sharply divided by the arrival of a radical and charismatic preacher who seeks followers to join him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to await Christ's return. Based on a true story, director Bille August's ("Pelle the Conquerer") adaptation of Selma Lagerlof's novel stars Maria Bonnevie, Olympia Dukakis, Ulf Friberg and Max von Sydow. 166 min. In English and Swedish with English subtitles. Cast: Olympia Dukakis, Lena Endre, Ulf Friberg, Sven Wollter, Max von Sydow

The Tin Drum (1979). Director: Völker Schlöndorff

Fantastic and moving tale about the rise and fall of Nazi Germany as seen through the eyes of a "man-boy" (David Bennett) who "refuses to grow" in order to ignore the horrors around him, venting his anger through a toy drum. Director Volker Schlöndorff's drama won the Best Foreign Film Academy Award. 142 min. In German with English subtitles. Academy Award® Winner: Best Foreign Film

Gösta Berling's Saga (1924). Director: Mauritz Stiller

In her second film role, Greta Garbo plays a young married woman who becomes the object of a defrocked priest's attentions. Moving Swedish drama of lost love and redemption, directed by Garbo's mentor, Mauritz Stiller, also stars Lars Hanson. AKA: "Atonement of Gosta Berling," "The Saga of Gosta Berling." 93 min. Silent with music score. B&W. Hamsum (1997) Director: Jan Troell

The gripping and compelling true story of Knut Hamsun, the Nobel Prize-winning Norwegian author who stunned his country when he sided with Hitler during World War II, not for Nazi ideals, but due to his deep hatred of Great Britain. With Max Von Sydow, Ghita Norby, Ernst Jacobi; directed by Jan Troell. 156 min. In Danish, German, Norwegian and Swedish with English subtitles.
