Directions: Each of the following sentences has verbs used in special ways: "lassen" and "sich lassen," special uses of the subjunctive one to express assumptions, formulaic commands (e.g. "let us assume
that . . . "). The goal of these substitutions is to see how agents or subjects of sentences can be hidden or generalized.
Decide how to rewrite each of the following sentences to preserve their meanings, while revealing hidden agents or hiding overt ones.
Common substitutions:
-sentences with "sich lassen" substitute for sentences with "man" (or other unknown subject)
-sentences that express directions or assumptions with subjunctive 1 substitute for sentences with "man kann" or "lassen mir/uns annehmen" or "nehmen wir an"
-sentences in the passive voice substitute for sentences in the active (and vice versa)
