Business German at UT

Welcome! The Business German Program at the University of Texas at Austin consists of four courses, beginning at the second year level. Our goal is to develop students' communicative competence in a variety of activities in the specialized field of German for Business and Economics (Wirtschaftsdeutsch). The curriculum combines an exposure to managerial processes with foreign language competency in German. Topics covered in our courses include the German market economy (Soziale Marktwirtschaft), advertising and sales, corporate culture, industrial relations, codetermination in German companies (Mitbestimmung) , the European Union, the role of the Euro, applying for a job or interbship in Germany, and intercultural differences in business encounters.

All classes use up-to-date broadcasts and podcasts from German TV, e.g. Deutsche Welle, as well as other authentic business materials from print and online sources. You will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as improve your intercultural awareness of German-speaking business environments. Upon completion of GER 356W, the sixth semester business language course, students can take the Goethe Institute Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf to obtain an internationally recognized Business German certificate.
