Assignment 1

This assignment is due by 9:30 on Tuesday, September 10. This assignment is worth 7% of your course grade. No late assignments will be accepted! Submit the assignment via e-mail to Cynthia Kolb (cdkolb@mail.utexas.edu). Answer the 6 questions below. In your answer you must include the URL of the page where you got the answer.

  1. When was Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the language of the Web developed. Who was responsible for it’s development?
  2. What are Cascading Style Sheets and why are they important?
  3. There are three graphics formats that are used on the Web, GIF, JPEG, and PNG. What do each of these acronyms stand for?
  4. What site was awarded the Best Entertainment Site in the Best of the Web Awards in 1997?
  5. What does doubleclick.net do? Does their Privacy Policy say anything about collecting personal information?
  6. What do the following programs do and where can you download them:
    1. MapEdit
    2. RTFtoHTML

Choose four of the six sites listed below and write a 1-2 paragraph review of the site. Include what you think is good about the site and what is bad about the site. Remember, you are reviewing the site, not just the main page. Your review must address the following questions:

  1. Is the site organization logical?
  2. Can you navigate it quickly?
  3. Are the graphics helpful and visually appealing?
  4. Is there useful content?
  5. Does it break any design guidelines we discussed in class?
  6. How long does it take for the main page to load? Is this reasonable?
  7. Identify one rule of style from the Yale Web Style Guide that the site breaks. Each site review must use a different style rule.
Think of some information you would expect to find at the site. For example at an educational site you might expect to find admission deadlines. Was it difficult to find the information you were looking for. Be specific.
