Assignment 3

Assignment 3 is due before 9:30 AM on Tuesday, October 1. No late assignments will be accepted. This assignment relates to log file analysis for the Business and Industry Guide here at UT Austin. Please consult the weekly statistics report and the raw log file in Excel format in order to answer the questions below. Prepare a Web page that answers these questions, upload the page to your Webspace folder and send the URL to Cynthia Kolb (cdkolb@mail.utexas.edu) when complete.

  1. What are the four most requested HTML pages (not GIF files) from the Business and Industry Site?
  2. What time of day was the site the busiest?
  3. What two foreign countries accounted for the most visits?
  4. Did the site have more visits from commercial hosts or educational hosts? Why do you think that might be?
  5. Using the information from the raw log files in the Excel spreadsheet, determine approximately how long the person from 128.83.222.123 browsed the site? How many files did they request?
  6. Using the information from the raw log files in the Excel spreadsheet, identify the click path for the user from 192.116.122.203 on September 17.
  7. By examining the statistics report, is there any changes you would make to the home page for this site? Why or why not?
  8. Take a look at http://www.utexas.edu/tours/. This page has links to online campus tours. Now examine http://www.utexas.edu/tours/stats/. Which tour was most popular (had the highest number of people visit the main page of the tour) and how many people visited the tour in the specified report period? Please include the date of the statistics report in your answer because new reports are run each week.
  9. Look at the TENET Web site and the statistics for that Web site. They are about to embark on a redesign. Based on the site statistics, what advice would you give them?
  10. Send the URL for your Assignment 3 page to Cynthia Kolb at cdkolb@mail.utexas.edu.
If the URL is incorrect in your e-mail message, we will count off 10 points.
