Phase 3c

The stone circles were remodeled again. A circle of bluestones was added just inside the outer trilithon circle, and the inner bluestone oval was replaced with a bluestone horseshoe. Aside from changes due to disturbance and decay in the intervening centuries, this is essentially what a visitor to Stonehenge sees today. However, it should be noted that the modern British government has also remodeled Stonehenge. The Avenue is no longer the entrance to Stonehenge. Instead, a single winding path takes visitors from the modern road to the edge of the outside circle of trilithons and then around the ditch and bank enclosure. The interior of the site is now fenced off so that no one can wander within the enclosure.
