Dr. Straussner is Professor, New York University School of Social Work and Director of their new Post-Master's Certificate Program in the Addictions. She has numerous publications applying research findings to clinical practice. Among her 14 books are: Clinical Work with Substance Abusing Clients (2 nd Ed, Guilford Press, 2004 ? selected by Psychotherapy Book Club); Understanding Mass Violence: A Social Work Perspective; (co-edited with Norma Phillips, Allyn & Bacon, 2003), Urban Social Work: Policies and Practice in the Cities (co-authored with N. Phillips); International Aspects of Social Work Practice in the Addictions (co-edited with Larry Harrison, Haworth Press, 2003), The Handbook on Women and Addictions (co-edited with S. Brown, Jossey-Bass, 2002) , Ethnocultural Factors in Addictions Treatment, (Guilford, 2001) and Gender and Addictions: Men and Women in Treatment (co-edited with E. Zelvin, Jason Aronson Press, 1997). She's the founding editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions (Haworth Press). Dr. Straussner was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to Israel in January, 2003 and had been a Visiting Professor at Omsk State University , Omsk , Siberia (2000) and Tel Aviv University (1994). She was the 2003 recipient of the Individual Distinction in Addictions Education and Training Award given by the Institute of Professional Development in Addictions, and was selected as Social Worker of the Year by the NASW ATOD Section in 2000.

Dr. Straussner served on the National Center on Substance Abuse Treatment panel onworkforce issues, and is currently the Northeast Regional Director for HRSA/AMERSA/SAMHSA/CSAT Project Mainstream, an Interdisciplinary Project to Improve Health Professional Education on Substance Abuse. She is also a founding member of NYU's Interdisciplinary Consortium on Substance Abuse and of NY State Institute on Professional Development in Addictions, and a past chair of NASW's Section on ATOD. In addition to substance abuse, her interests include mass violence and trauma, occupational social work, gender issues, family dynamics and social work education in urban communities.
Dr. Straussner conducts research, lectures and consults in U.S and abroad and has a private therapeutic and supervisory practice in NYC. |
