Early Protoattic Amphora
(Analattos Painter)

Note: At the end of the Geometric period in Athens (c.700BC), the Orientalizing period in pottery is known as Protoattic, since it preceded what would become Attic Black Figure in the last quarter of the seventh-century. For the first time, curved lines are brought into the Geometric repertoire (note the similarities in the presentation of the chariot procession scene) - hooked diamonds, spirals, and rosettes. Note also the introduction of the sphinx - this and the other new motifs all have eastern origins.
