Vowels: American English

The following is a clickable map demonstrating the vowel inventory of most American English speakers. Click on each vowel to hear examples of each. Note that the two central vowels sound pretty much the same in isolation. The main difference between the two is that the tent (inverted v) sound occurs in stressed syllables (like "funny"), while the schwa occurs in unstressed syllables (like "sofa").

After listening to each vowel, use your brower's Back button to return to this page.
