Identifying?

An identifying relationship means the parent's primary key is part of the child's primary key. That is, the parent's key helps identify the child.

A non-identifying relationship means the parent's primary key is just a foreign key in the child table. That is, the parent's key has nothing to do with the child's primary key.

Visio draws identifying relationships as solid lines and non-identifying relationships as dotted lines.
