Browser Requirements

The Music 612B/Music4 web site is a Netscape 3.0 enhanced site. Although the browser and software requirements are specific, the return benefit is a more interactive site that is suited to the study of music. Furthermore, if you do not possess the proper software, which is why your on this page in the first place, you do not have to worry about extra expenses purchasing software. The Netscape browser is free for students and educators. You just have to fill out the registration form at their download site.

Netscape Version

Whether your platform is Machintosh or Wintel (IBM or IBM clone running Windows), download version 3.0.1. Version 3.0.1 itself comes in two versions, standard or gold. You only need the standard version. The standard version requires at least 9 Megs of application RAM to run. If you are a Mac user and you don't have that much free RAM, turn on virtual memory.

Downloading Netscape

To begin the download procedure, click the Netscape Now logo at the top of the page. Then select the link called "Download Netscape navigator or Communicator." This link will take you to a page where you will select the proper version and platform. After submitting the form, you will be taken to a list of download sites. Select one that tickles your fancy. Fill out the form and wait while the file downloads.

Installing Netscape

This may not be very helpful, but follow the installation directions in "Read Me" file. Do what is necessary for your platform. Mach users remember to restart with extensions off (hold down the shift key during the restart till you see the "Welcome" message informing you that you started with extensions off). After installing the software, check the plug-in folder inside the Netscape folder. It should contain the QuickTime plug-in. Nevertheless, we are going to replace this version with a later version. Now you have half the software you need. What makes the music portion of this site is Apple's QuickTime software. To find out how to obtain the software, visit the midi page. Good luck!!!
