CC 303/352: Classical Mythology
Guidelines for Test II: Oct. 30, 2001
- Be sure to bring a blue book to the test on Tuesday. EXAMS
NOT WRITTEN ON A BLUE BOOK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
- Your test will have three parts:
- A: 5 very brief essay questions, from which you must choose 4.
Questions are drawn from chapters 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, and
18 of Powell's textbook, and our discussion of same. Each of these
questions requires both that you know the relevant myths and
that you can apply ideas we have discussed in class to an analysis
of those myths. Each of these esssays will be worth 10 points.
- B: A longer essay question in which you will apply one of the
ways in which we have interpreted Greek heroic myths to the myths
surrounding Perseus, Heracles, Theseus, and Jason. This essay is
worth 30 points.
- C: A longer essay on Euripides' Medea. This essay is
worth 30 points.
- Please note that the practice exam is intended only as a guide
to the nature of the questions that might be asked on the exam.
Under no circumstances should you assume that the practice test
includes the actual questions that will be asked on the exam.
- There were entirely too many missed exams when the last test
was given. This situation is unfair to those who make the exam and
causes much inconvenience both to the T.A.'s and to the
instructor. Please note therefore the following:
- Exams can only be made up if documented proof of extreme
family or medical emergency is provided, or in the case of a
religious holiday.
- The makeup exam will be more difficult than the original exam.
- Barring the most extreme emergencies (e.g., you are lying
unconscious in Inner Mongolia) exams can only be made up if the
instructor is notified within 24 hours of the time the exam is
given.
- The online outlines of lectures should provide a good guide as
you study for the exam, but you will need to supplement the
information given there with what you have gained from the book
and in lectures. If you have missed classes or have not kept
up with the daily readings, be sure to get notes from your
colleagues and catch up with the readings (cf. "Word to the Wise"
on your syllabus).
- For each question on the exam, make sure you answer each
part of the question. I will provide on the test itself a
division of how points will be assigned for each question.
- Please see Sonia, Brandy or me with any questions you may
have.
