CC 347: The Cultural History of Rome (Unique # 28560)
Directions for Book Report
1. Choose any scholarly book on any aspect of ancient Roman
history or culture. It should be at least 200 pages long. I prefer
that you choose a book on one specific topic rather than a general
book on Roman history.
2. Touch base briefly with me on the book you have chosen.
3. Write a book report of 5 pages double-spaced (no large fonts or
margins, please), following these guidelines.
- Include on the cover page your name, along with the author,
title, publisher, and year of publication of the book.
- In the first two pages, write a synopsis of the book.
Describe what the book is about, and the contents of each chapter.
- In the final three pages, provide your own assessment of one
aspect of the book. Choose one feature of the book that you think
is particularly strong or particularly weak, and explain why you
think that. You do not have to assess the entire book. Rather,
defend in detail your conclusions regarding the one aspect of the
book you choose to discuss. If you wish, you may compare the book
you have chosen with others on the same topic.
Be sure to follow these instructions carefully. If you do
not keep precisely to the prescribed format (i.e., if your paper is
more or less than 5 pages; if your summary and assessment are not 2
and 3 pages, respectively; or if you fail to concentrate on just one
aspect of the book in your assessment), you will need to rewrite the
paper.
Papers are due Tuesday, November 26th, 5:00 PM.
