Course Overview
This course is a broad introduction to the study of interpersonal communication. We will focus on the role of communication in relationships. Topics include rumors and gossip, charisma, long distance relationships, disclosure, shyness, love, and friendship.

Course Requirements:
EXAMS:  There are two major exams. Each exam has 60 questions, and each question counts for 1 point (for a total of 60 points per exam). About forty of the questions for each exam will come from lecture material, and about 20 will come from the text. For both exams you will have the option of taking a "retest" a second exam over the same material. If you take the retest, you will receive the higher of the two grades. The schedule of the testing is on the back of this sheet.

PAPER:  There is one short paper worth 20 points. Paper assignments will be distributed in class. You must turn the papers at the beginning of class on the day assigned. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

EXTRA CREDIT:  There may be extra-credit points available. For each extra-credit activity you will receive 1 point added to your final grade. You may not receive more than 2 points extra credit. You have a maximum of 140 points available for the whole semester.

a grade of A requires you to achieve 126 points;
a grade of B requires 112 points;
a grade of C requires 98 points;
a grade of D demands 84 points.

In addition to information from the regular lectures, the exams will include material from:
Guest Speakers. There will be a number of guest lecturers scheduled throughout the semester. You will be responsible for knowing the material they lecture on for all tests.

The Textbook. The text for the class is by Mark Knapp and Anita Vangelisti. It is entitled Interpersonal Communication and Human Relationships. You should read the first half of the book (chapters 1-6) for the first exam, and the rest of the book (7-12) for the second exam. About one third of each exam will come from the book material.
