Required Text:
O’Hair, D., Friedrich, G.W., &
Shaver, L.D. (1998) Strategic communication in business and the professions,
3rd Ed. New York, New York: Houghton Mifflin Company.
Additional
Required Readings: The Course Packet
is available at Longhorn Copies and additional materials will given in class.
Class &
Instructor Notes:
Contacting Your
Instructor: Office hours and email are the best ways to reach your
instructor. Please try to contact your
instructor within a reasonable amount of time given your assignments or
questions. The phone number listed
above has a voice-mail system so that you may leave messages after business
hours or if you do not have access to email.
I try to respond to email and voice messages within 24 hours (excluding
messages left over the weekends or holidays.)
Missed
Appointments: All appointments with your instructor are important. Please contact your instructor no less than
24hours before canceling an appointment.
This will allow me to offer the time slot to another student. Specifically – the appointments in which you
and your instructor watch your first round speech is REQUIRED. If you fail to show up for this appointment,
you will not be rewarded the opportunity to turn in your self evaluation late
or otherwise. We ask that you show up
on time and prepared for all appointments.
Dropping Off
Work:
Assignments will always be collected in class.
If you are turning in work early or late (20% grade reduction per day
late), please do so in my box on the 7th
floor in the CMA building. The
office staff MUST time stamp and date your work. [Do not leave assignments in
my office – with a person, under the office door, or on my desk. These methods always lead to lost work.]
Cell Phones
and Pagers: While these devices can be assets outside
the classroom, they are distractions in
the classroom. Out of respect for your
classmates and your instructor, all “noise makers” must be turned off before
class. Devices that go off during any
student presentation will result in a deduction in the owner’s grade for each occurrence .
Receiving
Evaluations: Your speech evaluations are constructed to
offer a thorough understanding of your work.
They are not simply a number or a grade. Therefore, it would not be a fair assessment if sent to you over
email or to give you a number over the phone.
You must pick up the complete evaluation in person from your
instructor. Evaluations will not be
discussed within the first 24 hours received.
This will give you time to read and understand the comments so that you
are prepared to have an in depth discussion with your instructor. Additionally, you must come to your
instructor within one week to discuss your evaluation.
Participation: Your participation makes this class
function, as it ought. Without active
discussions, the material is difficult to master and lectures become less effective. In order to have an actively participating
class I ask that you show up on time, be considerate of others feelings and
ideas, and please… ASK
QUESTIONS!
Helpful
Information and Contacts:
Students with
Disabilities: If you have a disability or special circumstance that will
require particular accommodations, you must notify your instructor in time to
make these accommodations available to you.
The Students with Disabilities (SSD) office will provide you with a
letter for your instructor. [471-6259 or 471-4641 TTY.]
The
Undergraduate Writing Center: Although this course does not seem to
have a heavy paper load, the assignments begin as well-prepared written
drafts. The Writing Center is an
excellent source for brainstorming, designing, and drafting your
presentations. I encourage you to use
this service in a timely fashion.
Always have the assignment in-hand when you arrive at the Writing
Center. [471-6222, located at FAC 211].
The Conflict
Resolution Center: Business and Professional situations always include a
level of group work as does this class.
UT is lucky to have an organization to help students work with others,
the Conflict Resolution Center. This
group does not need to wait to be helpful until your group is in conflict, but
can serve to help you draft group goals that best serve your purpose through
the TAP program. Your instructor will
give you further information about how you may use the Center to benefit part
of your group grade. [232-1724, located
at on the lower floor of the Student Services Building – by appt. only].
