INTRO TO MAYA HIEROGLYPHIC WRITING

 

 

How to read the writing of the ancient Maya civilization of Mexico and Guatemala.  The emphasis in lectures is on recognition of the most frequent glyphs (including day, month, and phonetic glyphs), on understanding the principles of the writing system, and on understanding who the Mayas were, as well as some of the content of the inscriptions.  Further, some basic calendrical materials are introduced so that important calculations can be made. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:  Homework consists of reading (one chapter or paper as assigned per week) and memorizing approximately 5 glyphs per week (for both recognition and production), as well as memorizing 20 day names and 18 month names, some glyph characteristics, and a few definitions of terms.  Grading is based on one midterm and one final exam as well as a couple of quizzes, homework problems.  Exams 32 percent, final 64 percent, class participation, quizzes, and homework problems 4 percent.
