SHORT PAPER FOR ANTHROPOLOGY 324 L
This paper, to be approximately 10 pages in length (typed, double spaced, 12 point characters, any recognized standard format) should be on one of the following six topics:
1) A personal experience
that you have had in which food production, distribution, preparation, or consumption was involved and that taught
you something significant about food practices in your family, state, or
country of relevance to the experience.
2) Read an ethnography
in which food practices are described in some detail and do a critical review
of the book, focusing on the author's description of the food practices.
3) Visit a food
distributor (market, store, outlet, restaurant, etc.) and take notes on what practices
you notice with respect to food, so that you can write a paper on your
experiences, including such analytical observations as possible ways that the
distributor can be said to deal with particular kinds of clientele (regarding
gender, class, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.), to distribute particular sorts of food items.
4) Take a food
that is produced, processed, or packed in Austin and through interviews and/or
other means trace the history of that food in Austin, letting it tell you about
the people who buy it or are otherwise affected by it..
5) Take a food
distributor originating in Austin (e.g. Central Market, Whole Foods,
Schlotzky's, etc.) and through interviews and or other means trace a history of
that operation.
6) Gather
information on community gardens in Austin and find out how they relate to one
another, what their goals are, their dates of operation, and other relevant
information to give an overall idea of where community gardens currently fit in
Austin, and perhaps how they might come to be utilized in the future.
