The Database Assignment

The goals are to:

1. create a usable database of article on teaching;

2. become familiar with journals on college teaching;

3. experience working with technology in teaching.

Your task is to review all four issues of the journal for the year you have been assigned. The eligible journals are College Teaching and Teaching of Psychology. Select 10-12 articles from those issues to review for the database. Your review will give a brief summary of the main idea(s) in the article and categorize it according to the following criteria:

1. the area of psychology or teaching being addressed (e.g. statistics, experimental, personality, etc. or any course)

2. the kind of teaching and class

a. inclass or out of class activity or demonstration or materials

b. cognitive level (higher, application, basic information)

c. class size (large, intermediate, small)

To access the database, use your web browser (Internet Explorer is preferred) to log on to http://jabba.edb.utexas.edu. Then click on our database at 398T_Database.fp5. This will take you to the file. There are two ways to view the entries, either form or table view. I prefer the form version. An example is attached.

1. To enter a new record, click on New Record in the left hand list. Place the cursor in the appropriate box (‘author’, ‘title’, etc.) and type in the information as shown in the example. When you’re done, click on “submit” and the item will be added to the database.

2. You can correct an item after it’s been submitted by clicking on “Edit Record” in the Form view. The procedure is just like entering a new item.

3. You should only delete your own records, not any that have been entered by someone else.

4. The other options in the left hand list are self-explanatory.

You should complete your entries by June 21^st. You can explore the database at any time.
