G   oal oriented preparation to study

Have a goal for what you intend to learn at each study session.
 

A    Active study

Do something with the information you are learning.  Don't just passively read or review.  Summarize, paraphrase, organize, create examples.
 

M    eaningful and Memorable

 Add information to the concepts you're studying to make them more interesting, more vivid, more connected to what you already know.
 

E   xplain to understand

Find someone else who will listen while you try to explain the concepts after you've learned them.  We learn best when we try to teach someone else.
 

S    elf-monitor your learning

Stop periodically and try to see how much you've understood.  Ask yourself questions.  Make a summary without looking at your notes.  Make sure you're paying attention while you're working.
