The Final Written Assignment

A Future Uses analysis

An important part of this course is understanding how you will use what you learn in the future. By now you should have a pretty good idea about this, so this final assignment is a 5 page discussion of two or three areas that you have studied in the course and how they might be applicable in your future, either as a professional or as a parent or simply for your own purposes. This paper will be worth 6 points. It will be due on May 3^rd.

The areas from which you can choose are the main areas we have studied:

Cognitive theory

Transfer

Self-regulated learning

Strategies for interactional teaching

Social learning theory

Behavior theory and behavior management

Motivation theory

The narrative would probably begin by explaining the future arena in which you intend to work and about which you are going to write, so I know how to understand your examples. Then you would select one of the above areas and describe how what was studied in that area would be used in your future work (e.g. how the types of interactional teaching and learning might be adapted to helping students with special dietary requirements learn about making decisions about eating; how the concept of transfer and ways to maximize it would apply to teaching a sport; how a particular motivational theory seems to be useful in understanding why middle school children might be more rebellious, etc.).

Write about at least two areas, preferably 3. No one area has to be discussed extensively, but concrete examples of its use need to be included. You don’t have to tell me what social learning theory, for example. I already know that and you’re writing this for me as a audience of one. What you will need to elaborate on is how that theory would get translated into action by someone in your chosen profession (or personal circumstance).
