1.  Provide continuing education in the teaching of reading to high school and college teachers.

2.  Create an opportunity for language instructors to become acquainted with and integrate national standards into classroom planning and instruction on reading, as well as on ancillary skills in foreign language teaching.

3.  Provide examples of integrated language instruction through the teaching of reading.

4.  Provide an interactive Model Distance Learning Course for teacher education, the outcomes of which include:
        -a self-tutorial on materials development
        -experiences with new teaching techniques
        -a self-tutorial on materials development
        -preparation of portfolio/curricular unit on integrated
        teaching of reading and other skills in the foreign language

5. Provide models for using reading materials both in textbooks and beyond the confines of traditional texts (e.g., on the Web, in German publications)
