Phase 5: Long-Genre Exercises

for Draußen vor der Tür:

Grade 12

Which exercise more effectively builds on prior elements in the curricular sequence to fulfill particular sets of Standards?  Which ones, and how?

After you read both exercises, justify your choice in the Brainstorming Forum below, or click directly on the Hints to see what factors may play into your judgments. After that, go on to Unit 8.

Exercise A:

Long-Genre Production, Grade 12

You are to produce a series of television interviews that will convey images of postwar Germany.  Using two or three of Borchert's characters as models for people that you will interview, write a series of questions and answers that would elicit and exemplify characteristic attitudes and behaviors during the 1946-1948 period in West Germany.

Exercise B:

Long-Genre Production, Grade 12

A Hollywood producer has asked you to rewrite Borchert's play with a "Happy End."  You must write a brief synopsis for her, comparing the original drama with the changes you will make to "lighten up" Borchert's grim story.  Remember to use contrast and comparison words such as "anstatt," "an der Stelle von," "im Gegensatz zu."
