AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS

Introduction

This web page has been designed to give a brief but detailed synopsis of the archaeological and historical remnants of the small, rural region of central Texas where I was raised.

I grew up in Whon, the countryside of the small town of Santa Anna. This particular area is quite rich in archaeological and indian artifacts. My father owned his own oil company, so often he drilled wells near the vicinity of our home. In doing so, he would often find and collect lithics. He was also a farmer; we owned a large amount of land which was plowed rather often. This process stirred the dirt and often brought artifacts to the surface where they were more visible. On these occasions my father would take me to the grain fields and we would begin one of our numerous searches for "arrowheads." Hours upon hours we would spend, walking up and down a fifty-acre field in search of the historical indian artifacts. On average, we would collect four to five each per search. During these trips my father would share all kinds of geographical facts with me, which he was primarily familiar with through his work in the oil business.

Perhaps these weekend journeys with my father created such a zealous interest in my juvenile mind that I felt the urge to investigate on my own. My interest in archaeology, especially of my homeland, persists still today. For this reason I have chosen to research the archaeology of the area and analyze the chronology of the artifacts found in that area that belong to ancient Indians that once roamed the land on which my home was built.

I have chosen what I found to be the most interesting historical and archaeological features of the area near my home. I have also included biographical information on a relative of mine who battled with the Indians and whose stories have been passed on for generations.
